what is defi?
DeFi, short for Decentralized Finance, disintermediates traditional, centralized financial models.
Built on top of public blockchain infrastructure, DeFi systems cut out intermediaries such as banks, brokerages and other lending middlemen who may introduce inefficiencies. DeFi is currently one of the fastest-growing sectors in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space.
DeFi protocols govern interactions algorithmically, permitting users to buy, sell, lend and borrow more efficiently and at lower costs.
DeFi services and applications permit the creation of customized, innovative services using blockchain technology. These financial services are provided via Decentralized Applications (Dapps).
Stable coins
Their value is pegged to a “stable” asset such as the U.S. dollar, the euro, gold or other crypto asset. There are two types of stables, custodial stable coins that store reserves of the asset and algorithmic stable coins such as DAI, that uses a collateral asset – in this case mostly Ethereum’s native currency ETH.
Lending
Decentralized lending allows users to collateralize their digital assets and use them to obtain loans. Because of the decentralized nature of public blockchain infrastructure lenders and borrowers can remain anonymous.
Staking
Locking up your crypto assets or tokens into a smart contract to earn passive income. By staking your crypto asset in a DeFi system, you earn rewards for holding your tokens.
Yield Farming
Earn interest tokens to give liquidity to Lending and DEX platforms. The token farming process starts when users deposit their funds on a lending or DEX platform and receive an APY (annual percentage yield).
Insurance
Just like in traditional finance, DeFi provides financial protection services to its users. Smart contracts are used to guarantee the insurance payout with the funds locked in the smart contract.
Derivatives
Decentralized derivatives are similar to classical financial products except that they are tokens that derive their intrinsic value from other crypto assets instead of other real-world assets.
